When you think of a city, it's likely that you envision towering, magnificent buildings that stretch into the sky for what seems like miles. Many metropolises take great pride in their skyscrapers, and it's easy to see why – in fact, the buildings are sometimes synonymous with the city itself, which make them a prime tourist attraction.
Chances are you might have heard about some of these iconic buildings, but there might be a few on this list that are new on your travel radar. Here are a few of the most impressive skyscrapers in the world:
Taipei 101 in Taipei
As if the eccentric design of this building wasn't impressive enough, the Taipei 101 was the world's tallest skyscraper from 2004 to 2010 and remains one of the most stunning sights in all of Asia. It's also one of the most eco-conscious skyscrapers on earth and was equipped to withstand typhoons.
The Shard in London
As the tallest building in Western Europe, the Shard is a beautiful pyramid-shaped structure located in the heart of central London. At the top, there are 360-degree views of the city below and the design of the building was intended to be a "vertical city" with residences, a hotel, restaurants as well as offices.
Burj Khalifa in Dubai
This newcomer opened its doors in 2010 and at the time was the largest man-made structure on the planet. This building also broke records for the the world's highest nightclub, observation deck, restaurant and fireworks display. Not too shabby for just being four years old. Many people consider the Burj Khalifa to be a symbol of the city's vast modern expansion in recent years.
The Willis Tower in Chicago
As the crowned jewel of the long line of impressive skyscrapers along Lake Michigan, the Willis Tower is perhaps best known as the Sears Tower to many. It was one of the most innovative buildings ever constructed during its debut in 1973 and remains one of the tallest buildings in the world.
The Chrysler Building in New York City
The crowning arches and distinctive Art Deco flourishes make the Chrysler Building perhaps the most artistic skyscraper on this list. The chrome spires and wings at the top of the structure were crafted to resemble 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. At night, the external lighting that shines from the apex of the structure is just one of the many reasons the Manhattan skyline is so awe-inspiring.
